Biological Control of Woolly Apple Aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum HAUSM.) with Aphelinus mali HALD. Organic Eprints
Hetebrügge, K.; Fieger-Metag, N.; Kienzle, J.; Bathon, H.; Zebitz, C.P.W.; Zimmer, J..
The release of Aphelinus mali HALD. from artificial rearing for the control of Woolly Apple Aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum HAUSM.) was tested in field trials. The release of adults proved to be more suitable than the release of cards with parasitized mummies as practised in the first trial. Setting free adult A. mali at the beginning of June reduced the aphid population, though its efficiency was not high enough to prevent damage of the trees totally. The practical applications of A. mali in early spring (after blossom) were not effective because climatic conditions were not suitable enough. The fertility of A. mali depends on temperature and light intensity. The application of Micula (rape oil) and T-S forte reduced the growth of the aphid population...

Control of the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea Klug in organic fruit growing Organic Eprints
Kienzle, J.; Zimmer, J.; Maxin, P.; Rank, H.; Bathon, H.; Zebitz, C.P.W..
The best application technique and application data for the treatments with Quassia extract against the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea Klug were tested. The spraying solution was distributed best on the receptacle of the blossom – the place where the sawfly larvae feed before the enter the blossom – when the treatment was effecttuated at fading blossom with a high amount of water (about 500 l/ha/mTh). The addition of T/S forte, a wetting agent, could also improve the efficacy of Quassia treatments in a lower dose. Thus, it is recommended to apply in fading blossom with addition of T/S forte and high amounts of water to obtain the best effect. If the conditions for applications are good and the infestation is not too high, the normally...

Control of the woolly apple aphid (Erisoma lanigerum Hausm.) by releasing earwigs (Forficula auricularia L.) and support oil applications - an interim report of first year results Organic Eprints
Toups, I.; Zimmer, J.; Trautmann, M.; Fieger-Metag, N.; Buchleither, S.; Bathon, H..
The woolly apple aphid (Erisoma lanigerum Hausm.) has been recognised for some years as a serious pest in organic fruit growing where they may cause severe economic damage due to a lack of control strategies. Based on preliminary results a new project has been started in 2007 testing combinations of releasing earwigs and oil applications in order to develop an onfarm control strategy. In this paper we present preliminary results of the first year of the project´s field trials. They showed good efficacies for applying oil preparations by brush. The efficacy of releasing earwigs depended on the infestation intensity.

Efficacy of Quassia extract on the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea Klug Organic Eprints
Kienzle, J.; Zimmer, J.; Maxin, P.; Rank, H.; Bathon, H.; Zebitz, C.P.W..
The efficacy of Quassia extract with a standardized content of Quassin was proved in various field trials in different regions during three years. The amount of Quassin of 6 g/ha/m tree height will be recommended to practice. It is not important to have a contact effect on the eggs. The larvae must feed on the product before they enter the fruit. There is a very good efficacy on primaray infestation. Furthermore, there is even an efficacy on secondary infestation. Thus, even if due to difficult conditions during application or not optimal termination of the treatment the efficacy on the primary infestation is not entirely sufficient, the secondary infestation will be controlled better.

Erste Freilanduntersuchungen zur Wirkung von Madex plus gegen CpGV-resistente Apfelwicklerpopulationen in Öko-Betrieben Organic Eprints
Kienzle, J.; Zebitz, C.P.W.; Zimmer, J.; Volk, F..
In first field tests on codling moth (Cydia pomonella L.) populations proven to be resis-tant against codling moth granulovirus (CpGV) Madex plus, a selectioned CpGV, proved to be rather effective and showed a better efficacy than Madex 3, the standard CpGV-product. However, it is to consider that high amounts of Madex plus were used (50 ml/ha and m tree height each seven sunny days (a rainy day is considered half a sunny day). Moreover, the risk of development of resistance against this new selection is not clear yet. Thus, even if now a new selection of CpGV is available for the first time, the strategy of codling moth control in organic farming must rely on more components than only CpGV and mating disruption in the future.

Experiences with entomopathogenic nematodes for the control of overwintering codling moth larvae in Germany Organic Eprints
Kienzle, J.; Zimmer, J.; Volk, F.; Zebitz, C.P.W..
Entomopathogenic nematodes were tested for their potential as tool in resistance management of codling moth Cydia pomonella L. in organic fruit growing. In two field tests, the adults emerging from stems treated with nematodes were monitored. In one trial, 90 % of efficacy could be shown. On-farm trials with favourable weather conditions showed an efficacy about 50-60 % on fruit infestation by codling moth in the year following the application. On-farm trials with unfavourable weather conditions showed no results. The favourable weather conditions for the application are discussed with reference to German conditions.

Field tests with Madex Plus against CpGV-resistant codling moth populations in organic orchards in 2006 Organic Eprints
Kienzle, J.; Zimmer, J.; Volk, F.; Zebitz, C.P.W..
When resistance to the Mexican isolate of Cydia pomonella Granulovirus (CpGV-M) arose in several organic orchards in Germany in 2004 and 2005, the future of codling moth control became a serious concern of organic fruit growing. In 2006, a new virus isolate from Andermatt Biocontrol AG (Madex Plus) was first tested in two field trials in organic orchards on codling moth populations resistant against the Mexican isolate of CpGV. Madex Plus showed a better efficacy on these populations than Madex 3. However, larval mortality larvae seemed to be somewhat delayed. A very good effect was shown in population control. The number of larvae in corrugated card board belts was significantly reduced after treatment with Madex Plus. In addition to these trials,...

Optimizing crop loading of apples and pears - results 2004-2006 (foliar fertilizers, thinning) Organic Eprints
Pfeiffer, B.; Eis, B.; Zimmer, J.; Fieger-Metag, N..
Main topics of the research-project FuE 03OE088 of “Bundesprogramm Ökologischer Landbau” (30.04.2004-31.12.2006) were the testing of foliar fertilizers in organic apples and pears, optimizing lime sulphur for blossom thinning, looking for alternatives to lime sulphur for blossom thinning and looking at different combinations of thinning measures. Only the results of testing foliar fertilizers (carried out by KoGa Ahrweiler and OVB/ÖON Jork) and combinations of thinning measures (carried out by LVWO Weinsberg) are described in this article. Over three years only a small increase in yield was evaluated for the fertilizers Aminosol PS and Wuxal Ascofol (site Ahrweiler, apple variety ‘Elstar’). In Jork (apple variety ‘Holsteiner Cox’) yield could only...

Regulierung der Apfelsägewespe im Ökologischen Obstbau und Nebenwirkungen der Strategien auf die Blutlauszehrwespe Organic Eprints
Kienzle, J.; Zimmer, J.; Klopp, K.; Maxin, P.; Yamada, K.; Bathon, H..
The effects of Quassia extract on eggs and larvae of the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea were studied in the laboratory. The efficacy of this extract was mainly due to an oral toxicity to neonate sawfly larvae. The main active ingredients, Quassin and Neoquassin, were tested sepa-rately as pure substances. While Quassin had a considerable efficacy also on older larvae, Neo-quassin was less efficient in this case. Since Quassin and Neoquassin were found in different Quassia sources in varying relations to each other and had different efficacy, they have to be considered separately in the definition of extract quality by the content of active ingredients. This requires the application of Quassia extracts before larval hatch. It was shown that low...

Untersuchungen zur Regulierung von Apfelsägewespe und Blutlaus im ökologischen Obstbau Organic Eprints
Kienzle, J.; Zimmer, J.; Klopp, K.; Maxin, P.; Yamada, K.; Bathon, H.; Zebitz, C.P.W.; Ternes, P.; Vogt, H..
